Free over the air television is the least understood part of cutting cable. It is genuinely free after the hardware, the picture on main network channels is often better than the same channel delivered any other way, and it covers a slice of programming that streaming services charge for. It also has hard limits that no antenna purchase can move.
What over the air broadcasting actually is
Local stations transmit a digital signal over public airwaves. In the United States that has been the ATSC digital standard since full power analog transmission ended in 2009, and every television sold for the US market since March 2007 has been required to include a digital tuner. There is no account, no monthly charge and no data usage. You need an antenna, a coaxial cable and a tuner.
Each station is allocated a 6 MHz channel and divides it among a main program and any subchannels it chooses to run. That allocation is the reason picture quality varies so much between stations in the same market.
What you get
- The major network affiliates. Their prime time schedules, national news and the sports packages those networks hold.
- Local news and weather. This is the category that streaming replaces least well, and in an emergency it is the one that keeps working when broadband does not.
- Public television and its education and documentary subchannels.
- Digital subchannels. Classic series, older movies, news, Spanish language programming and specialty networks. Markets vary widely in how many exist.
- High bitrate main channels. A station that runs few subchannels can give its primary feed most of the 6 MHz allocation, which frequently yields a cleaner picture than a compressed cable or satellite version of the same channel.
That last point is worth expanding, because it explains a lot of complaints. A station that carries a main channel plus four or five subchannels is dividing one fixed data rate among all of them. The main feed gets thinner, and the subchannels are often standard definition at low bitrates, which is why a classic movie network over the air can look soft while the network affiliate next to it on the dial looks excellent. Nothing at your end changes that. It is a decision made at the transmitter.
What you do not get, and cannot buy your way into
- Cable only networks. Sports networks, lifestyle channels and 24 hour cable news do not broadcast over the air. No antenna receives them.
- Regional sports networks and most out of market games.
- Guaranteed reception. What reaches your address depends on transmitter locations, terrain, buildings and antenna height. It is address specific.
- A channel count. Anyone quoting a number for your home is guessing. Look your address up in the FCC DTV Reception Maps tool or AntennaWeb before spending anything.

Most households that leave cable end up running both. The antenna covers networks and local news at no recurring cost, and a box from the streaming media players category covers everything else. A current player such as the Kinhank G1 handles the app side on a television whose own platform has fallen behind, while the set’s tuner keeps handling broadcast.
The equipment list is short
A tuner
Almost certainly already in your television. Sets like the Roku Smart TV 65R6A5R or the smaller Hisense 32A4NR combine an app platform with a broadcast tuner, so one input covers both. Commercial signage displays are the exception and often ship without a tuner at all.
An antenna matched to the bands your market uses
This is where most money is wasted. Look up the real transmission channels for your local stations, not the channel numbers shown on screen. A station that displays as 4.1 may transmit on a completely different radio frequency channel, and the band it sits in determines the antenna you need.
- UHF only markets suit a directional UHF antenna. The Antennas Direct 91XG is a uni-directional UHF yagi whose manufacturer description cites a narrow 24 degree beam angle, which is well suited to towers clustered in one direction.
- Markets with VHF stations need VHF elements. The Winegard YA7000C is specified for VHF-Low channels 2 to 6, VHF-High channels 7 to 13 and UHF, which is a wider brief than most compact antennas attempt.
- Mixed VHF-High and UHF markets with interference are the case for something like the Televes Ellipse Mix, which Televes describes as filtering signals above 608 MHz to keep cellular transmissions out of the tuner.
- Apartments and short distances often work with an indoor panel such as the Winegard FL5500A FlatWave Amped, which mounts flat on a wall or window and draws power over USB for its built in amplifier. Indoor reception is the least predictable case, so buy where returns are easy.
Ignore the mile number on the box. Those figures are not standardized, are not verified by any independent body, and assume unobstructed line of sight. Two homes the same distance from the same tower can get completely different results. Browse the TV antennas category by band coverage and directionality rather than by advertised range.
Coaxial cable, and a rescan
Use RG6 rather than thin patch cable, keep the run as short as practical, and make sure connectors are tight. Then run the television’s channel scan again after every change to the antenna’s position or aim. Sets do not find new stations on their own.
Recording, and one product that will not do it
Broadcast DVRs exist as separate devices that take an antenna feed and record to internal or network storage. What will not work is repurposing a pay television receiver. The Dish Network VIP722K is a satellite DVR with a large drive and dual tuners, but its tuners are satellite tuners tied to a Dish account. It cannot record over the air broadcasts, and without active service it does not function as a recorder at all. That distinction catches people out regularly on the secondhand market.
Setting expectations honestly
Over the air television is worth setting up in most of the country and disappointing in some of it. Rural homes far from transmitters, valleys, and apartments facing away from the towers are all cases where an antenna may return very little regardless of what is spent. The 2017 to 2020 spectrum repack also moved many stations to new frequencies and pushed the top of the UHF band down to channel 36, so older reception advice and older antenna reviews can be out of date.
Check the coverage map for your address first. Then buy an antenna matched to the bands your local stations actually transmit on, put it as high as you reasonably can, and treat any channel beyond the reliable set as a bonus rather than a plan.
