Juicers Compared: Masticating, Centrifugal and Citrus

Juicers separate liquid from fiber, and there are only three mechanical ways to do it on a countertop. A spinning disc throws the juice out of the pulp, a turning screw squeezes it out, or a rotating cone presses it out of a half of citrus. Everything else on the specification sheet follows from which of those three the machine uses.

Centrifugal: a cutting disc and a spinning basket

A centrifugal juicer drops produce onto a flat blade disc spinning inside a fine mesh basket. The blade shreds, the rotation flings the shreds against the mesh, and centrifugal force pushes juice through the holes while the pulp climbs the wall. It is fast, it takes big pieces, and it is loud.

Speed is the defining number. The Robot Coupe J80 Ultra is listed at 3000 revolutions per minute on 120 volts, with automatic pulp ejection. Its larger sibling the Robot Coupe J100 adds a 7.5 quart waste container so it can run continuously rather than stopping to empty a pulp bin. Both are commercial machines, and the J100 listing quotes a weight near 40 pounds, which is a useful reminder that continuous duty hardware is not countertop friendly in a domestic kitchen.

Home centrifugal units follow the same design at a smaller scale. The GDOR JE2106 is listed at 1200 watts with a 3.2 inch feed chute and a 45 ounce jug, and the wide chute is the feature that matters most day to day, because it decides how much chopping you do before you start.

Masticating: an auger, slowly

A masticating juicer turns a screw shaped auger against a screen. Produce is crushed rather than cut, and the pulp is pressed as it travels along the auger. Speeds are an order of magnitude lower. The Omega J8006 Nutrition Center is specified at 80 revolutions per minute with a 150 watt motor and dual stage extraction, crushing first and pressing the pulp a second time. The Sana 727 Supreme publishes a 45 to 120 revolutions per minute range on a four speed brushless motor.

Low speed does two measurable things. It whips less air into the juice, so there is less foam and less separation in the glass, and it generates less friction heat. Those are mechanical outcomes. Marketing around cold press juicing often extends this into nutrition claims, and those go beyond what the specification sheet supports, so treat foam and separation as the reliable difference and leave the rest alone.

The other real advantage is leafy produce. A spinning basket struggles with spinach, kale stems and herbs because there is nothing to shred against. An auger grips them. If greens are why you are buying a juicer, the auger design is the one that does the job.

Hoppers, chutes and the prep time nobody quotes

Most of the labor in juicing is chopping, so feed geometry is worth more attention than motor wattage. The Kuvings AUTO10 pairs a 240 watt motor with a 100 ounce batching hopper, so a whole recipe goes in and the machine feeds itself. The Omega Effortless Series takes the same approach with a 2 liter, 68 ounce hopper and an all in one auger that cuts the number of parts to wash. The Aeitto cold press juicer uses a 3.3 inch chute with self feeding instead of a large hopper.

Cleaning is the other hidden cost, and manufacturers have started designing for it. The Hurom H400 is built around a chamber with no separate strainer, which Hurom says removes the scrubbing step that a fine mesh screen normally forces on you. Whether a part is dishwasher safe is worth checking in the manual rather than the listing, since the Sana listing above records dishwasher safe in one field and not dishwasher safe in another.

Citrus: a reamer, not a juicer in the same sense

A citrus juicer presses a cut half onto a ridged cone that turns, usually reversing direction to work the membrane loose. There is no cutting and no screen. The Dash Dual Citrus Juicer is representative, with an auto reversing electric reamer, two cone attachments for different fruit sizes, adjustable pulp control and a 20 ounce pitcher. Its specification block describes the special feature as manual while also recording a corded electric power source, which is a contradiction in the feed rather than a description of the product.

Citrus juicers do one thing, do it quickly, and cost and store far less than either of the other two. If oranges and lemons are the whole use case, the other categories are the wrong aisle.

Yield claims deserve care in all three categories. Every manufacturer says its machine extracts more, and the actual result depends on the produce, its ripeness, and how finely it is chopped before it goes in. The proxy you can check yourself costs nothing: squeeze the discarded pulp. Wet pulp means juice left behind, and that comparison is more useful than any number in a listing.

Counter space, height and power

Masticating juicers are tall because the auger stands vertically in most current designs. The Kuvings unit is listed at 18.07 inches high and the Aeitto at 19.53 inches, and both need clearance above to load the hopper. Measure from the counter to the underside of the wall cabinet before buying, because a juicer that has to be moved to be used tends to stop being used.

Electrically these are modest loads next to a toaster oven. A United States kitchen counter circuit at 120 volts and 15 or 20 amps has no trouble with a juicer alone. The caution is the same as everywhere else in a small kitchen: several heat producing appliances on one circuit is what trips a breaker, and a juicer plugged into the same strip as a kettle and an air fryer is sharing that budget. Note also that specification fields on these listings are unreliable, with maximum power sometimes recorded in scientific notation and the customer review field on the Robot Coupe entries carrying a sales rank string instead of a rating.

Choosing between them

If you juice hard fruit and vegetables, want it fast, and do not mind the noise, a centrifugal machine is the practical choice, and the centrifugal juicers listings are the place to compare chute sizes. If greens are on the list, or you want juice that separates less in the glass, look through the masticating juicers and compare hopper size and part count rather than wattage. If it is only citrus, buy a reamer and keep the counter.
