Indoor vs Outdoor TV Antennas, and Why Advertised Mile Ratings Mislead

The number printed largest on an antenna package is its advertised range in miles. It is also the least reliable figure in the entire product category. Understanding why it misleads, and what to check instead, is worth more than any comparison of antenna models.

Where the mile number comes from

Nowhere standardized. There is no test procedure, no independent verification body and no agreed measurement conditions behind a range claim on a television antenna. Manufacturers calculate it from antenna gain under assumptions they choose, and the assumption that does the heavy lifting is unobstructed line of sight between the antenna and the transmitter.

That assumption almost never holds. Broadcast signals at UHF and VHF travel in essentially straight lines and are blocked, absorbed and reflected by terrain and structures. A hill, a taller building or a stand of wet trees between you and the tower ends the discussion no matter what number is on the box.

The arithmetic makes the point faster than any argument

Radio signals bend slightly further than the visual horizon, and the standard approximation for the radio horizon is about 1.4 times the square root of the antenna height in feet, expressed in miles. Run it in both directions:

  • A transmitter 1,000 feet above ground reaches a horizon of roughly 45 miles.
  • A receiving antenna 30 feet up adds roughly 8 miles.
  • Together that is a little over 50 miles of clear path, on flat ground, with nothing in the way.

So a 70 mile claim is not automatically dishonest, but it requires a tall transmitter, a well elevated receiving antenna and genuinely open terrain at the same time. Set the same antenna on a bookshelf in a ground floor apartment and the geometry alone has already removed most of that figure, before a single wall is accounted for.

Digital reception does not fade, it stops

Analog reception degraded gracefully into snow. Digital does not. A channel is either decoded cleanly or it breaks up and disappears, and the transition between the two happens across a narrow range of signal quality. This is why small changes in antenna position sometimes produce dramatic results, and why an antenna that works at one address fails a block away.

What to check instead

  • Look your address up in the FCC DTV Reception Maps tool, which predicts signal strength for each station from your location.
  • Cross check with AntennaWeb, which reports the compass bearing to each transmitter as well as the predicted strength.
  • Note the real transmission channel for each station, not the channel number shown on screen. That tells you whether you need VHF-Low, VHF-High or UHF coverage.
  • Note whether the stations you want sit in one direction or several. That decides directional versus multi directional far more than distance does.

Those four checks take a few minutes and are the only address specific information available before you buy anything. Nobody, including this page, can tell you which channels your home will receive.

Indoor antennas: convenient, and working against the building

An indoor antenna has to receive through the building envelope. What that costs depends entirely on construction:

  • Low emissivity window coatings are microscopically thin metal oxide layers. They are excellent at reflecting heat and quite good at reflecting UHF too, so the window that looks like the obvious spot may be the worst one in the room.
  • Foil faced insulation and radiant barrier sheathing behave like a partial shield.
  • Stucco over wire lath, metal siding and metal roofing attenuate heavily.
  • Reflections from wiring, appliances and neighboring buildings create multipath, which confuses the tuner even when raw signal strength looks adequate.

Indoor antennas are still the right first attempt for anyone close to the transmitters or renting. A flat panel such as the Winegard FL5500A FlatWave Amped is 12 by 13 inches and about 0.6 inches thick, tapes to a wall or window, and carries an embedded low noise amplifier that Winegard specifies at a typical 1.0 dB noise figure. The dual color finish exists so it can face either way against a wall. What amplification cannot do is recover a signal the building has already absorbed, and that limit applies to every amplified indoor antenna regardless of the range printed on the package.

The attic compromise

An attic install gets height and keeps the antenna out of weather and out of sight, at the cost of whatever the roof takes out of the signal. Asphalt shingles over plywood are a modest loss. A metal roof, or sheathing with a foil radiant barrier, can cost enough to erase the height advantage entirely. Attics also run hot, which is hard on any amplifier mounted up there.

Outdoor antennas: where the physics stops fighting you

Outdoors you get the two things that actually move reception: height and a clear path. You also get real directional gain, which does double duty by rejecting reflections arriving from behind the antenna.

  • The Antennas Direct 91XG is a uni-directional UHF yagi. Antennas Direct describes a narrow 24 degree beam angle with reflectors to reduce interference, and the listed dimensions of 93 by 24 by 22 inches make clear that this is a full size roof antenna, not a compromise. A narrow beam is an advantage where the towers cluster in one direction and a liability where they do not.

Broad band coverage matters in markets where stations remained on VHF after the digital transition, and many compact antennas quietly skip VHF.
  • The Televes Ellipse Mix targets High VHF and UHF with independent amplification per band and a filter above 608 MHz, which is the frequency boundary created when broadcasters were moved out of the 600 MHz band and cellular services moved in.

The costs are real: mounting hardware, a mast, weatherproofed connectors, a grounding block on the coaxial line and a bonded mast in line with electrical code, plus roof access. Private restrictions on antennas are limited by the FCC’s Over-the-Air Reception Devices rule, though that rule has exceptions, including for safety and for masts extending more than twelve feet above the roofline.

Two traps in the antenna aisle

The first is buying by advertised range, which this whole article exists to discourage. The second is buying the wrong kind of antenna entirely, because retail categories mix products that share a word and nothing else. The Shure UA825 sits under antennas at retail and is a 25 foot BNC coaxial extension cable for wireless microphone receivers. It receives nothing on its own. The Diamond X30A is a genuine antenna, but it is a 2 meter and 70 centimeter amateur radio base antenna on a 50 ohm connector, not a television antenna on 75 ohm coaxial.

Shop the TV antennas category when you want broadcast television and the radio antennas category when you want two way or scanner coverage. They are not interchangeable.

After it is installed

Rescan the tuner after every change in position or aim, because sets do not discover stations on their own. Then use the television’s own signal meter, which most sets expose in the channel or antenna setup menu on models such as the TCL 55S455 or the Samsung UN40N5200, and watch signal quality rather than raw strength. Quality is what determines whether the picture locks.
