HDR Formats Explained: HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG

High dynamic range is the single biggest picture quality change since the move from standard definition, and it is also the most badly explained. A television listing that says “HDR” has told you almost nothing. What matters is which formats the set decodes, and separately, whether the panel behind the decoder can actually do anything with the signal.

What HDR changes

Standard dynamic range video was designed around the limits of cathode ray tubes. It encodes a narrow brightness range and a color space, Rec.709, that covers a modest slice of what the eye can see. HDR raises the ceiling on highlight brightness, keeps more detail in shadows, uses 10 bits or more per color channel instead of 8, and targets a much wider color container.

Critically, HDR content carries metadata: information telling the display how the content was mastered so the set can map it onto its own capabilities. How that metadata works is the main thing separating the formats.

The four formats you will actually meet

HDR10 is the open baseline. It is mandatory on UHD Blu-ray, supported by every HDR streaming service, and carried by essentially every HDR television. It uses static metadata: one set of mastering values applied to the whole title. That works well when a film has a consistent look and less well when a dark thriller cuts to a bright daylight scene, because the display’s tone mapping has to compromise across both.

HDR10+ adds dynamic metadata to the same underlying stream, so mastering values can change scene by scene or even frame by frame. It was developed largely by Samsung and Amazon and is free of the per unit licensing that Dolby charges.

Dolby Vision also uses dynamic metadata, signals up to 12 bits, and requires a licensed Dolby decoder in the display. It is the most widely supported dynamic format across streaming services and disc. Dolby Vision IQ is a later addition that uses the television’s ambient light sensor to adjust the tone mapping for the room you are sitting in.

HLG, or Hybrid Log Gamma, was designed by the BBC and NHK for broadcast. It carries no metadata at all and is backward compatible, so the same signal renders acceptably on an SDR set. If you watch over the air or satellite HDR, this is the format involved.

Support is not universal, and the gaps are deliberate

The formats are not simply layered. A set can support one dynamic format and not the other, and the split falls largely along manufacturer lines. Samsung sets support HDR10 and HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision, and their listings reflect that: the Samsung QN55LS03D lists Quantum HDR, and the Samsung QN98QN90A lists Quantum HDR 32X. Both of those are Samsung’s own tier names for their HDR implementation rather than a separate format, and neither listing mentions Dolby Vision.

Most other brands go the other way. The Sony XR83A80L and the LG OLED55C1PUB both list Dolby Vision, the LG specifically as Dolby Vision IQ. Across the QLED TVs section, Dolby Vision turns up on the Roku Plus Series 65R6A5R, which lists HDR10+ alongside it, and on the TCL 98Q651G, whose listing also carries the marketing name HDR Pro+. Treat any name ending in Pro or Plus that is not one of the four standard formats as branding until you find the format list.

The most complete listing in this catalog belongs to the VIZIO V4K50C-0809, which names Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG together. If you want a set that will not refuse a format, that combination is what to look for on the box.

Decoding a format is not the same as displaying it

This is where most HDR disappointment comes from. A television can accept an HDR signal, decode the metadata correctly, and still show you a picture that looks flat or dim, because HDR asks for highlight brightness and color volume that the panel simply may not have.

The catalog contains clear examples of decode without the panel to match. The Sony KD32W830K is a 32 inch HD set whose listing includes HDR10 and HLG. The VIZIO VFD40M-0810 is a 1080p set that lists HDR10 and HLG. Those sets will accept an HDR stream rather than error out, which is genuinely useful, but a small HD panel without local dimming or wide color has limited headroom to show what HDR encodes. The honest framing is compatibility, not capability.

What actually makes HDR look like HDR is the hardware underneath: enough peak brightness for highlights to separate from the rest of the image, a wide color gamut so saturated reds and greens do not clip, and contrast control so raised black levels do not wash the shadows out. A quantum dot panel with full array local dimming, such as the Hisense 55A6HX in its own listed configuration or a larger mini LED set, has more of that headroom than a basic edge lit LCD does.

What the rest of the chain needs

HDR only reaches the panel if everything between the source and the screen passes it. That means an HDMI input at version 2.0a or later for HDR10 metadata, HDCP 2.2 or later for protected content, and enough bandwidth for the resolution and frame rate you want. If you route audio through a receiver or soundbar, that device has to pass the format too, and an older unit is a common reason Dolby Vision silently drops to HDR10.

The source matters as much. Among streaming media players, the Zidoo Z3000 Pro listing names Dolby Vision and HDR10+ explicitly, and the Kinhank G1 listing names HDR10+ along with Dolby Vision and Netflix certification. Certification matters more than raw capability here, because streaming apps check for it before they will send you a high bitrate HDR stream at all.

How to shop for it

Decide first whether you care about dynamic metadata. If most of your viewing is Netflix, Disney and Apple content, Dolby Vision support is the one to insist on. If you are heavily into Amazon originals or UHD discs that carry it, HDR10+ is worth having. If you want both, avoid the manufacturers that pick a side and look for a listing that names all four formats.

Then match the panel to the ambition. HDR on a bright quantum dot set with zone dimming is a different experience from HDR on an entry level panel that merely accepts the signal. If your budget forces a choice between a set that lists more HDR formats and a set with better contrast hardware, the contrast hardware is the better spend.
