An air fryer is a small convection oven. A heating element sits close to the food and a fan drives hot air past it fast enough to dry and brown the surface. Nothing is fried. The two shapes on sale run the same physics in different boxes, and the capacity number printed on the box means something different in each one.
Basket style: a drawer under a fan
In a basket unit the food sits in a perforated basket, the basket drops into a drawer, and the element and fan sit directly above it. The chamber is small, so it heats quickly and recovers quickly when you pull the drawer out. You cook in a layer, you shake or turn halfway, and you cook in batches.

What the quoted capacity actually measures
Three conventions hide behind the same word.
- Basket volume. The quart figure is the whole basket, including headroom you cannot fill. Food has to sit close to a single layer for air to reach it, so the number you can use is floor area, not volume.
- Cavity volume. On oven style units the quart figure describes the box. What matters is the largest pan that slides in, and how many rack positions there are.
- Split capacity. Dual basket units add both drawers together. The Ninja DZ201 Foodi DualZone is listed at 8 quarts, but that is two zones, so the largest single item is limited by one drawer, not by the total.
Listing data compounds the confusion. The Ninja Foodi DZ100 renewed unit carries a specification block that gives 10 quarts against an 8 quart product title, quotes 230 volts on a product sold for United States outlets, and states outside dimensions smaller than the cavity it claims. Those are data faults in the feed, not features. The Magic Bullet MBA50100 shows a milder version, with 2.5 quarts in the title and 2.5 liters in the specification table, which are not the same volume. Where a listing contradicts itself, treat the manufacturer manual as the reference and the feed as unverified.
A practical way to translate quarts into dinner is to think in layers rather than volume. A 2 quart basket holds roughly one portion of fries or one chicken breast without crowding. A 5 to 6 quart basket handles two to four portions if the pieces are small. Once you need to cook a tray of vegetables and a tray of protein at the same time, you have left basket territory, and the question becomes how many rack positions an oven style cavity gives you.

Power, heat and the circuit behind the counter
Countertop cooking appliances are among the heaviest loads in a home kitchen. In the United States a kitchen small appliance circuit is typically 120 volts at 15 or 20 amps, and code generally calls for more than one of them serving the counter.
