Screen size is the one television decision that cannot be fixed later with a settings menu. It is also the one most often made by guessing. The useful way to approach it is not “how big will fit on the wall” but “how much of my field of view do I want the picture to occupy, and can I still resolve the detail I am paying for from where I sit.”
Two separate questions get tangled together
The first question is immersion: how wide an angle the screen subtends from your seat. The second is acuity: whether your eyes can resolve the individual pixels at that distance. They pull in the same direction but they are not the same calculation, and confusing them is why so much size advice contradicts itself.
Immersion is a matter of taste with published starting points. SMPTE recommends a horizontal viewing angle of roughly 30 degrees for general viewing, and THX recommends roughly 40 degrees for a more cinematic effect. Converted into a rule of thumb for a 16:9 screen, 30 degrees works out to sitting about 1.6 times the diagonal away, and 40 degrees to about 1.2 times the diagonal.
What that means for a real sofa
Measure from the front of your seat cushion to the wall the television will sit on, then work backward.

Most living rooms land between 8 and 11 feet, which puts the sensible range somewhere between 55 and 85 inches depending on how much of the wall you want the picture to own. A TCL 55S455 at 8 feet is a comfortable, conservative choice. A Hisense 85U6N at the same distance is closer to the cinematic end. Very large sets such as the TCL 98Q651G, the Hisense 100QD7N and the Samsung QN98QN90A assume a genuinely long room. At 8 feet they will fill more of your vision than most people find comfortable for a news broadcast.
Where 4K resolution stops mattering
A 4K panel packs 3840 pixels across. Human visual acuity is commonly modeled at about one arcminute, meaning two points closer together than that angle blur into one. Beyond a certain distance the extra 4K pixels are simply smaller than your eye can separate, and the picture looks the same as it would at 1080p.
For a 16:9 screen, the distance at which 4K pixels become individually indistinguishable is roughly 1.5 times the picture height, which is a little under 0.8 times the diagonal.

Read that table honestly and an awkward conclusion follows. At a typical 9 foot seating distance on a 55 inch screen, you are past the point where 4K pixels resolve individually and roughly at the point where 1080p pixels stop being visible either. The 4K panel is not wasted, because sharper source material still carries better detail rendering, less aliasing and cleaner edges, and because upscaling and processing differ between sets. But the resolution number alone will not transform the picture from that seat. Contrast, color volume and brightness will do far more.
When 1080p is still the right buy
Below roughly 43 inches, and at normal seating distances, the argument for 4K weakens considerably. That is why sub 43 inch sets in LED and LCD TVs are still routinely sold at 1080p or lower. The Hisense 32A4NR and the VIZIO D32f-F1 are both listed at 1080p, and the LG 32LJ500B is a 720p set. On a 32 inch screen in a bedroom or kitchen, that is a defensible engineering choice rather than a corner cut.
The interesting case is 43 inches, where both options exist side by side. The VIZIO V4K43M-08 is a 4K set, while the VIZIO VFD43M-0804 and the VIZIO D43fx-F4 are 1080p. If the screen is going somewhere you sit close to, such as a desk or a small den, the 4K panel earns its place. If it is going across a room, the difference is much smaller than the marketing suggests.
One more factor cuts against buying purely on resolution: most of what people watch is not 4K. Broadcast television in the United States is still transmitted at 1080i or 720p, and a great deal of streaming catalog content is 1080p or lower. All of that has to be scaled up to fill a 4K panel, and the quality of that scaling varies considerably between sets. On a very large screen, a set with weak upscaling can make ordinary broadcast television look softer than it did on the smaller set it replaced. If most of your viewing is live television rather than 4K streaming, that is a stronger argument for moderating the screen size than any pixel count calculation.
The advertised size is not the panel size
Manufacturers describe screens by class, and the class is rounded. Listings usually carry the real figure in a field called standing screen display size, and the two rarely match exactly. The Hisense 32A4NR listing gives 31.5 inches. The Samsung UN40N5200A is a 40 inch class set listed at 39.5 inches. The VIZIO V4K50M-08 is sold as 50 inches and listed at 49.5. The Hisense 100QD7N is listed at 99.5 inches and the Samsung QN98QN90A at 97.5.
Half an inch of diagonal changes nothing you can see. It matters when you are fitting a set into a cabinet opening or an alcove, where the number you actually need is the outside width of the chassis, not the diagonal at all. Take that from the product dimensions field, and be aware that those fields are inconsistent across listings on this site and elsewhere: some are measured with the stand attached, some without, and some are shipping carton dimensions. Where a set is going into a tight space, measure the space and confirm the chassis width with the manufacturer rather than trusting a single listing figure.
A practical way to decide
Sit where you actually watch and have someone hold up a piece of cardboard cut to the width of the screen you are considering. Screen width for a 16:9 set is about 0.87 times the diagonal, so a 65 inch television is roughly 57 inches wide. That crude test settles the immersion question faster than any calculator, because it accounts for your ceiling height, your seat position and how much wall you are willing to give up.
Then let resolution follow size rather than lead it. If you land at 50 inches or above, buy 4K, because that is what the market makes at those sizes anyway and the QLED TVs and larger LCD sets are all built around it. If you land at 32 or 40 inches for a secondary room, a 1080p panel with a decent smart platform is the more sensible use of the money.
