HDMI Versions and Port Counts: What to Check Before You Buy

HDMI is the least glamorous part of buying a television and the part most likely to leave you stuck. A set can have the panel you want and still refuse to run your console at its full frame rate, or force you to unplug something every time you want to use the disc player. Both problems are visible in the specification before you buy, if you know which line to read.

What the version numbers actually mean

HDMI versions are mostly a story about bandwidth. Each generation raised the ceiling on how much data can cross the cable per second, and that ceiling determines which combinations of resolution, frame rate, color depth and chroma sampling are possible.

Two entries there matter more than the rest. HDMI 2.0a is the point at which HDR10 metadata can cross the cable, so an older 1.4 input will not carry HDR properly even if the display can decode it. HDMI 2.1 is the point at which 4K at 120Hz becomes possible at full color, which is the specification current games consoles are built around.

The HDMI 2.1 label is not what you think

This is the trap. When HDMI 2.1 was published, the licensing body folded the earlier specification into it, so version 2.0 formally ceased to exist as a separate label. The practical consequence is that a port with 18 Gbps of bandwidth and none of the new features can legitimately be marketed as HDMI 2.1, as long as the supported feature list is disclosed somewhere.

So “HDMI 2.1” on a box is not a capability claim. The capability claims are the individual features: 48 Gbps or 40 Gbps of bandwidth, 4K at 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, eARC. Look for those by name. If a listing says 2.1 and names none of them, you have learned nothing.

Count the ports, then count them again

Most televisions ship with three or four HDMI inputs. That sounds like plenty until you list what plugs in: a games console, a streaming stick, a soundbar or receiver, a disc player, and possibly a second console or a PC. Four is a working minimum for a main living room set and three will have you swapping cables.

The count is only half the story, because the ports are rarely identical. On many sets, only one or two inputs carry full bandwidth, and exactly one supports eARC. That means the physically available ports for a high frame rate console can be fewer than the total, and if your soundbar occupies the eARC port you may be down to a single full bandwidth input.

ARC and eARC decide how your sound gets out

The audio return channel sends sound from the television back down an HDMI cable to a soundbar or receiver, so you do not need a separate optical run. ARC, introduced with HDMI 1.4, has limited bandwidth and carries compressed surround formats. eARC, introduced with 2.1, carries far more, including uncompressed multichannel audio and lossless Dolby Atmos.

If you plan to use anything more than a stereo soundbar, find the eARC port in the manual before you mount the set, because that single port determines the whole layout of your cabinet. It is also the reason a perfectly good older receiver sometimes silently downgrades a Dolby Vision or Atmos stream: the chain is only as capable as its weakest link.

Listings almost never tell you any of this

Be prepared to do this research away from the retail listing. Across the televisions in this catalog, HDMI version and port count are usually absent. The TCL 55S455 is one of the few whose title even names its connectors, listing Wi-Fi, RF, USB, Ethernet and HDMI, and it still gives no count and no version. That is typical rather than unusual.

Where a listing does say something useful, it is usually about a feature rather than a version. The VIZIO V4K50C-0809, the VIZIO VFD43M-0804 and the VIZIO VFD40M-0810 all list “HDMI VRR” in their features. That confirms variable refresh rate is supported over HDMI on those sets. It does not tell you the version, the bandwidth or how many inputs there are. Take the feature at face value and go to the manufacturer’s specification page for the rest.

Commercial and signage displays are a separate case again. The LG 55UR340C is listed as a commercial UHD display with management software, a scheduler and Crestron certification, and the Sharp 4P-B75EJ2U is an AQUOS commercial panel. Those products are specified around installation control systems rather than home cinema, and their input sets, control ports and audio return behavior can differ from a consumer set at the same size. Read the commercial datasheet, not the consumer assumptions.

Where the ports sit matters if you wall mount

Physical layout is worth checking before the set is on a bracket. Inputs that face directly backward are hard to reach once the television is close to the wall, and a thick HDMI cable can prevent the set from sitting flush or, worse, put lateral stress on the connector. Side facing or downward facing ports are much easier to live with on a wall mount. If yours face backward, right angle HDMI adapters exist and are the standard fix.

Older equipment and the converter question

If you are replacing a television but keeping older sources, check what they output before assuming a modern set will take it. Plenty of legacy hardware, including satellite boxes like the Dish VIP722K, comes from an era when component video was still standard, and modern televisions have largely dropped analog inputs entirely.

That is what the video converters category exists for. An HDMI to component converter bridges a modern source to an older display, and a capture device such as the Wolverine TransMedia moves analog tape formats into digital files. Note the direction of travel on any converter before buying, because HDMI to component and component to HDMI are different products and they are not interchangeable.

A short checklist before you buy

Write down every device that will plug in, add one spare, and treat that as your minimum port count. Find out how many of those ports are full bandwidth, not just how many exist. Identify the eARC port and plan your audio around it. If you are buying for a console, confirm 4K at 120Hz and VRR by name rather than accepting the version number. If you are buying a streaming media player as well, remember it takes a port too, and a high specification unit like the Zidoo Z3000 Pro will want one of the better ones. None of this is exciting, and all of it is cheaper to sort out before the television is on the wall than after.
