Why Built-In TV Speakers Disappoint, and What Actually Fixes It

Almost every complaint about television sound comes down to one sentence: you cannot move much air with a small driver in a shallow box. Everything else, the muddy dialogue, the absent bass, the way an action scene turns into a hiss, follows from that. It is a physics problem the industry has been engineering around for fifteen years, and it is worth understanding before you spend anything trying to fix it.

Why the physics are against a flat panel

Producing sound means displacing air. Producing low frequency sound means displacing a lot of it, which requires either a large cone or a small cone moving a long way, and in both cases an enclosure of meaningful volume behind the driver so the rear wave does not cancel the front one.

A modern television chassis is a few centimeters deep at the bottom and thinner than a pencil across most of the panel. There is no room for a driver of useful diameter, no room for excursion, and no enclosure volume worth the name. The design pressure that made televisions beautiful is the same pressure that made them sound thin.

It gets worse from there. Since the bezel is too narrow to hold a driver facing you, most sets fire their speakers downward or backward. That means the sound you hear has bounced off your cabinet, your shelf or the wall behind the set before reaching you, and the character of that bounce changes with the furniture. A television on an open glass shelf and the same television in a closed cabinet sound different, and neither sounds like what the designer intended.

Reading the audio line in a listing

Manufacturers describe television audio in channel notation. The first number is the main channels, the second is subwoofers, and a third number, when present, is height channels for Dolby Atmos.

The catalog shows the whole range. The LG OLED55C1PUB lists a 2.2 channel system, which means dedicated bass drivers rather than asking the main pair to do everything. The Samsung QN55LS03D lists 2.0.2CH with Dolby Atmos, so it has up firing drivers intended to bounce height information off your ceiling. Its predecessor, the Samsung QN55LS03B, lists a plain 2.0CH arrangement. The VIZIO V505-G9 says “Dual Speaker,” and a great many sets say only “Built-In,” which tells you nothing whatsoever.

The two claims most likely to mislead you

The first is surround decoding presented as surround sound. The Hisense 40H4030F4 lists “Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound” among its special features. A 40 inch television does not contain 5.1 speakers. What that line means is that the set can decode a 5.1 bitstream and fold it down to its two drivers, which is genuinely useful because it means the set will not refuse a surround soundtrack. It is not the same as reproducing one, and the listing does not distinguish between the two.

The second is virtual surround processing. DTS Virtual X, which appears on VIZIO sets such as the VIZIO VFD40M-08, and similar systems from other brands, use psychoacoustic trickery to make two drivers suggest a wider soundstage. These processes can genuinely widen the presentation. They cannot create bass that the drivers are not physically capable of producing, and they often do their widening at the cost of dialogue clarity.

Power ratings, where they appear at all, are worth a glance rather than a decision. The Hisense 65U6K listing gives an output wattage figure, but amplifier watts tell you nothing about driver size, enclosure volume or frequency response, which are the properties that actually determine what you hear.

The manufacturers who engineered around it

A few approaches genuinely address the physics rather than papering over it. Sony’s Acoustic Surface Audio Plus, listed on the Sony XR83A80L, uses actuators to vibrate the display panel itself, turning the screen into the diaphragm. The advantage is that the sound comes from the image rather than from below it, which helps dialogue appear to come from the person speaking. Samsung’s Object Tracking Sound Plus, listed on the Samsung QN98QN90A, uses multiple drivers around the chassis to pan sound with on screen movement.

Both are real engineering rather than marketing, and both still run into the same limit at the bottom of the frequency range. A panel actuator cannot move the air that a subwoofer cone moves.

What actually fixes it, in order of cost

Change the settings first, because it is free. Turn off the enhancement and virtual surround modes and set the sound mode to Standard. Those processes are usually the reason dialogue is buried. If your set offers a dedicated dialogue or speech mode, that is the exception worth leaving on, because it lifts the midrange where voices live. Check the audio output format setting too, since some sets default to a mode that limits what they will pass to external equipment.

Move the television. If the drivers fire downward, a set sitting on a soft surface or pushed into a closed cabinet is being muffled by its own furniture. A hard, flat surface below and some clearance behind will change the sound more than most people expect.

Add a soundbar. This is the single largest improvement per dollar, because a soundbar has depth the television does not, and drivers that face you. The step that matters most is a separate subwoofer, which is where the missing bass actually lives. We do not currently stock soundbars or AV receivers, so this is a category to shop elsewhere for, but it is the right recommendation and worth saying plainly.

Connect it correctly. Use HDMI eARC if both devices have it, because that is the only common connection that carries full bandwidth uncompressed audio and lossless Atmos. Standard ARC works but compresses. Optical is reliable and universal, and it cannot carry lossless formats at all. Check which port on your television is the eARC port before you plan the cabinet layout, because it is usually only one of them.

Two situations where the built in speakers are enough

For a small secondary set, they often are. A Hisense 32A4NR in a bedroom, whose listing names Dolby Audio, is doing a job where near field listening at modest volume is the whole requirement, and hanging a soundbar off it would be disproportionate. The same applies to most smaller sets in the LED and LCD TVs range.

The second is late night viewing, where the answer is headphones rather than louder speakers. Several VIZIO sets, including the VIZIO V4K50M-08, list Bluetooth headphone capability directly, which avoids a separate transmitter. Expect some lip sync offset over Bluetooth and check whether your set has an audio delay adjustment, because most do.

The short version

If you are buying a large set for a main room and you care about films, budget for external audio from the start rather than discovering the problem afterward. Sets in the OLED TVs range and the larger quantum dot models are capable enough visually that thin sound becomes the limiting factor quickly. If you need a set that sounds as good as a flat panel reasonably can on its own, look for a listing that states a real channel configuration, ideally with dedicated bass drivers, rather than one that says only “Built-In.”
