Nearly every small appliance that touches food has a coated surface somewhere: an air fryer basket, a crisper plate, a rice cooker pot, a grill plate, a deep fryer basket, a baking tray. Those coatings wear out, and most of the wear comes from three avoidable causes. This is what the specifications do and do not tell you, and what the manufacturer instructions actually govern.
Nonstick is a category, not a material
The word covers several unrelated surface treatments. Some are fluoropolymer films, some are ceramic derived coatings applied as a liquid and cured, some are reinforced or textured coatings on cast aluminum. They behave differently in heat and under abrasion, and a product listing usually does not say which one you are buying.
Where a manufacturer does state the chemistry, it is worth reading exactly. GreenPan describes the bowl in its ceramic nonstick rice and grain cooker as a PFAS free ceramic nonstick coating, and states it directly in both the title and the specification block. Starfrit names its surface on the Rock indoor electric grill as a Rock.Tec nonstick treatment over an extra thick cast aluminum plate. George Foreman calls the surface on the GR0040B two serving grill George Tough nonstick.
Those are brand names for coatings, not chemistry statements, with the GreenPan case being the exception because it names what the coating excludes. Most listings say only that a nonstick coating is present. That field tells you the surface is coated and nothing else, and it is not a basis for assuming what the coating is made of.
Three things that wear a coating out
- Heat above the stated limit. Every coated part has a maximum temperature set by the manufacturer. Countertop cooking gets close to it: air fryers commonly run to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and some ovens higher. Running an empty coated basket at maximum temperature to preheat puts the surface at its hottest with no food absorbing energy, which is the worst case for the coating.
- Mechanical abrasion. Metal tongs, metal spatulas, knives cutting in the pan, scouring pads and abrasive powders all take material off. So does stacking a coated basket inside another metal part in a cupboard.
- Harsh washing. Dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline and the cycle is long and hot. Even where a part is rated dishwasher safe, hand washing is gentler on the surface, and the manual usually says so.
Aerosol cooking sprays deserve a separate mention. Many contain propellants and additives that bake onto the surface and build up a sticky brown film over time. That film is not the coating failing, it is residue sitting on top of it, and it is difficult to remove without abrasives, which then damages the coating underneath. Oil brushed or wiped on directly avoids the problem.
Dishwasher safe, according to which field?
This is where product data on marketplace listings falls apart, and the honest advice is to ignore the listing and read the manual. Consider what the specification blocks in this catalog actually record. The Ninja DZ201 Foodi DualZone is marked as not dishwasher safe, while the closely related DZ100 listing is marked as dishwasher safe. The Magic Bullet MBA50100 is marked not dishwasher safe. The Chefman 2 quart mini air fryer is described in its own title as having a nonstick and dishwasher safe basket.
Worse, some listings contradict themselves inside a single specification block. The Robot Coupe R2 Dice records dishwasher safe in the care instructions field and not dishwasher safe in the boolean field immediately below it. The Sana 727 juicer does exactly the same thing. When two fields on the same page disagree, neither is evidence. The document that governs is the manual that shipped with the appliance.

Where coated parts turn up, and how they differ
Air fryer baskets and crisper plates take the hardest life, because they are coated, they sit closest to the element, and food is regularly shaken and scraped in them. Toaster oven trays are gentler duty, and manufacturers do design for washing: the BELLA air fry toaster oven lists dishwasher safe coated trays among its included components.
Cooker pots are a different case again, because they spend long periods in contact with water and starch rather than dry heat. The Brentwood TS-10 uses a removable nonstick pot, and the Cuisinart Cook Central multicooker uses a nonstick removable pot that also has to survive browning at up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a wider temperature range than a rice pot ever sees. Zojirushi takes the conservative line on its NP-HCC10XH induction cooker, where the care instruction recorded is hand wash recommended.
Deep fryer baskets sit in hot oil rather than hot air, and the coating there is mostly about release and cleanup rather than cooking performance. The West Bend 3 liter deep fryer lists a nonstick basket alongside a folding handle and a locking cover.
First use has its own instruction and it is easy to skip. Manufacturers commonly ask you to wash coated parts before cooking to remove manufacturing residue, and some specify a short empty run to burn it off. Where that is required, follow the temperature and duration printed in the manual rather than defaulting to the maximum setting, and ventilate the kitchen while it runs.
When a coating is worn out
A coating that has lost its release, or that is visibly flaking, is no longer doing the job it was installed to do. Manufacturers sell replacement baskets, pots and trays for many of these appliances, and replacing the part is the correct response rather than working around a failing surface. Health questions about coating particles are outside what a product listing can answer, and this site does not take a position on them either way. What can be said from the specifications is narrow and useful: the coating has a stated temperature limit, a stated cleaning method and a finite service life, and following the manufacturer instructions extends it.
If you want to reduce coated parts in the kitchen, uncoated options exist and are usually obvious from the materials line. Stainless baskets, stainless jars and glass carafes all show up in specifications, and some manufacturers make a selling point of it.
