Refresh Rate vs Motion Rate: Reading a TV Motion Spec Honestly

Of all the numbers printed on a television box, the motion figure is the one most likely to be inflated. A set advertised at 240 may have a 60Hz panel. A set advertised at 120 may have a 60Hz panel too. The word doing the work is the one immediately before the number, and if you learn to read that word, the rest of the motion specification becomes straightforward.

Native refresh rate is the only real number

Native refresh rate is how many times per second the panel can physically draw a new image. It is a hardware property, it cannot be changed by firmware, and in consumer televisions it is almost always 60Hz, 120Hz or 144Hz. A 60Hz panel cannot display 120 distinct frames per second no matter what processing sits in front of it.

Manufacturers who have a 120Hz or 144Hz panel usually say so plainly, because it costs more to build. Hisense writes “Native 144Hz” directly into its listings for sets such as the Hisense 75U7K. The word “native” is the signal. When it is present, believe the number.

Motion rate, clear motion index and the rest

Every large manufacturer also publishes a second figure with a proprietary name: Motion Rate, Clear Motion Index, TruMotion, Motion Xcelerator, Auto Motion Plus and others. These are indices, not refresh rates. They combine the panel’s actual refresh with whatever motion processing the set applies on top, which typically means one or more of three techniques:

  • Frame interpolation, where the processor invents intermediate frames between real ones. This is what produces the smooth, video like look often called the soap opera effect.
  • Black frame insertion, where the panel briefly goes dark between frames so each frame is held in front of your eye for less time. It sharpens motion and costs brightness.
  • Backlight scanning, where sections of an LCD backlight strobe in sequence rather than staying continuously lit, achieving something similar to black frame insertion.

None of those techniques add a real frame from the source. They change how motion is presented, and whether that is an improvement is partly a matter of taste. What they are not is a refresh rate, and a marketing index doubled from the panel’s real figure is the industry norm rather than an outlier.

The same listing often gives you both numbers

The clearest evidence that these figures are different things is that manufacturers frequently print them side by side. The listing for the Hisense 100QD7N reads “Native 144Hz, Motion Rate 240” in the same line. Both statements are true and they describe different things: the panel refreshes 144 times per second, and Hisense’s motion index for the set is 240.

The Hisense 85U6N shows how confusing this gets when the two numbers are separated. Its product title advertises Motion Rate 240, while its special features field lists Native 144Hz. A shopper reading only the title would reasonably conclude the panel runs at 240Hz. Nothing in the listing supports that, and the two fields have to be read together to get a correct picture.

Lower down the range the gap is wider. The Hisense 40H4030F4 is a 1080p set whose title includes “Game Mode 120 Motion Rate.” That is an index on an entry level panel, and the listing does not state a native refresh rate anywhere. The correct conclusion is not that the panel is 120Hz. It is that the listing has not told you what the panel is.

Samsung, LG, VIZIO and their own vocabularies

Samsung uses Motion Xcelerator, and helpfully attaches a real figure to it in some listings. The Samsung QN55LS03D lists “Motion Xcelerator 120Hz,” which does describe a 120Hz capable set. Elsewhere the same family drops the number entirely: the Samsung QN98QN90A lists “Motion Xcelerator Turbo+” with no figure at all. Turbo Plus is a tier name, not a measurement, and you would need Samsung’s own specification page for that model to learn the panel rate.

VIZIO frames it differently again. The VIZIO M65Q6-L4 listing advertises “120FPS @ 1080p PC Gaming.” Read that carefully: it describes an input mode at reduced resolution, not a claim that the panel accepts 120Hz at 4K. High frame rate at 1080p is a real and useful feature for PC players. It is a different specification from 4K at 120Hz, and the two are often conflated in write ups.

Plenty of listings say nothing at all. Neither the Sony XR83A80L nor the TCL 55S455 gives a refresh figure in its listing data. Silence is not a specification. Where the number matters to you, check the manufacturer’s own model page before buying.

Why refresh rate matters for film, not just games

Cinema is shot at 24 frames per second, which does not divide evenly into 60. A 60Hz panel has to use a 3:2 cadence, holding some frames for three refreshes and others for two, and the resulting unevenness is the judder you see on slow camera pans in a widescreen film. A 120Hz panel can hold each film frame for exactly five refreshes, so the cadence is even and the judder goes away without any interpolation being applied.

That is the strongest argument for 120Hz for people who do not game at all, and it is rarely the argument used to sell it.

Response time is a separate property

Refresh rate governs how often a new image appears. Pixel response time governs how quickly a pixel finishes changing color once asked to. An LCD can refresh at 120Hz and still smear, because liquid crystal takes time to twist. OLED pixel transitions are far faster, which is why an OLED such as the LG OLED55C1PUB tends to look cleaner in motion than an LCD of the same stated refresh rate.

What to do with this when shopping

Search the listing for the word “native.” If it is there with a number, that is your panel rate. If it is not, look for a figure attached to a resolution and a frame rate, such as 4K at 120Hz, which is a genuine capability statement. Everything else that consists of a brand word plus a large round number is an index, and comparing indices between manufacturers is meaningless because each one calculates its own differently.

If motion clarity matters to you, look for a native 120Hz or 144Hz panel and expect to pay for it. Larger sets in the QLED TVs range are where those panels concentrate. If your viewing is mostly broadcast television and casual streaming, a 60Hz panel in the LED and LCD TVs range is perfectly serviceable, and the money is better spent on contrast and brightness than on chasing a motion index.
