Console gaming pushed televisions to change more in five years than the previous fifteen. A set that is excellent for films can still feel sluggish and untidy with a controller in your hand, and the specifications that decide this are separate from the ones that decide picture quality. There are four of them, and they are worth understanding individually because most sets support some and not others.
Input lag: the one that decides how the game feels
Input lag is the delay between the console sending a frame and that frame appearing on screen. It has nothing to do with your internet connection and everything to do with what the television does to the image on the way through. Noise reduction, motion interpolation, upscaling and color processing all take time, and a set doing all of them adds a noticeable delay before anything reaches the panel.
Game Mode is the fix. It switches most of that processing off, trading some image cleanup for responsiveness. Every manufacturer has a name for it, and those names are worth reading rather than skimming, because they often bundle in other features. Hisense uses Game Mode Pro on sets such as the Hisense 75U7K and Game Mode Plus on the Hisense 85U6N. LG calls its version Game Optimizer, listed on the LG 65UQ7570PUJ. TCL lists Game Accelerator on the TCL 98Q651G. Sony’s listing for the Sony XR83A80L names a Game Menu and a set of features specific to the PlayStation 5.
The practical point: if a set has a game mode, use it. If a listing does not mention any game mode at all, that absence is meaningful for a set you intend to game on.
ALLM: game mode that turns itself on
Auto Low Latency Mode is a small feature with a large quality of life benefit. The console tells the television it is sending a game rather than a film, and the set switches into game mode by itself, then switches back when you open a streaming app. Without it you are picking the right picture mode manually every time you change what you are doing, which in practice means half your gaming happens in the wrong mode.
ALLM arrived with HDMI 2.1 and is supported by both current generation consoles. It is usually listed under HDMI features rather than gaming features, so look for it by name.
VRR: fixing tearing and stutter
A fixed refresh television draws a new image on a metronome. A game engine does not render on a metronome, because frame times vary with what is happening on screen. When those two fall out of step, you get either a torn image, where two frames are visible at once, or a stutter, where a frame is held twice.
Variable refresh rate solves this by letting the panel change its refresh rate on the fly to match the render rate. There are three labels for essentially the same idea. HDMI Forum VRR is the standard built into HDMI 2.1. AMD FreeSync is AMD’s implementation, which appears in television listings surprisingly often. Nvidia’s G-Sync Compatible is a certification program applied to some sets.
Listings do name this when it is present. The Hisense 100QD7N and the VIZIO M65Q6-L4 both list AMD FreeSync. VIZIO also uses the plain term on several sets, including the VIZIO V4K50C-0809 and the VIZIO VFD40M-0810, both of which list HDMI VRR in their features.
One caveat that specification sheets rarely explain: VRR only operates within a range. Below the bottom of that range, either the feature stops helping or the set uses frame doubling to compensate. A game that drops well under the supported window will still stutter. The wider the VRR range, the more useful it is.
120Hz: real, but check what resolution it applies to
Both current consoles can output 4K at 120Hz over HDMI 2.1, and a native 120Hz or 144Hz panel is what lets you see it. This is where marketing gets slippery, and the trap has two parts.
The first is the motion index problem. A number like Motion Rate 240 is a vendor index that combines the panel refresh with processing, and it is not a refresh rate. The Hisense 40H4030F4 lists “Game Mode 120 Motion Rate” and does not state a native refresh anywhere, so nothing in that listing establishes a 120Hz panel. Look for the word native.
The second is resolution. The VIZIO M65Q6-L4 listing advertises 120 frames per second at 1080p for PC gaming. That is a genuine and useful capability, and it is not the same claim as 4K at 120Hz. High frame rate at reduced resolution needs far less bandwidth, and many sets support one without the other. If 4K at 120Hz is what you need, look for those two numbers stated together.

Panel type still matters for motion
Refresh rate governs how often a new frame appears. Pixel response time governs how quickly the panel finishes drawing it. An LCD can be a genuine 120Hz set and still trail smear behind fast movement, because liquid crystal takes time to settle. OLED transitions are far quicker, which is why an OLED such as the LG OLED55C1PUB tends to look cleaner in motion than an LCD quoting the same refresh rate. Sets in the OLED TVs range carry a static image wear risk that matters if you leave a game HUD on screen for many hours at a time, which is a real consideration for some players and irrelevant for others.
Cloud gaming is a different problem
Several sets now include cloud gaming apps, and the LG 65UQ7570PUJ listing names cloud gaming among its features. This is worth separating from local console play, because the latency budget is completely different. With a console in the room, the display is the main source of delay. With cloud gaming, your network round trip usually dwarfs anything the panel contributes, and a low latency television improves the experience only at the margins. Judge cloud gaming on your connection first.
What to look for
If you play competitively or on a current generation console, look for a native 120Hz or higher panel, VRR named explicitly, ALLM, and enough HDMI bandwidth on at least one input, then confirm which specific port carries it. Larger sets in the QLED TVs range are where those features cluster.
If you play single player games, or mostly on an older console or a Switch, the calculation changes. Game mode and reasonable responsiveness cover most of the benefit, and a 60Hz set with good contrast will serve you better than a 120Hz set with a mediocre panel. Buy the features you will actually use rather than the ones with the largest numbers attached.
